This past weekend my sister Kasia did an amazing job acting as the spokesperson for our family owned business. She appeared on ABC Chicago to showcase what we are known for.
"The holidays are all about decorating, and why not pay homage to our Windy City? Polish immigrants Jan and Grazyna do just that at their DOM itp (domitp.com) European housewares shops around town. They celebrate their love for Chicago with keepsakes featuring landmarks such as Millennium Park, Water Tower, Cellular and Wrigley Fields, and the Chicago Municipal Flag. You can find their ornaments at the Christkindlmarket (chirstkindlmarket.com), which opens on November 23 at Daley Plaza." From abclocal.go.com
I had originally planned on representing our family business but my MIL's health kept me in Cleveland. Luckily my sister who had just stepped off the plane from India-Houston-Mexico-DC-Africa-Chicago took one for the team and appeared on air. You can hardly tell that she traveled around the world the night before. She looked like a natural explaining our family business. Brava, Kasia! The tv segment was very educational and informative, we are very proud of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. My sister captured the spirit of it all in the video below.
Many people aren't aware how much of a family business we are. My younger brother started working at the store when he was my son's age and now he manages the website. My sister designs the Chicago themed ornaments. My mother runs around in her stilettos from one store to the next, every single day of the year making sure everything is stocked. My father has a weekly radio show and deals with the warehouse and logistics of imports from Poland. My son started working at DOMitp for $2.25 an hour. He was up to $3.25 an hour last winter while working at the Christkindlmarket. By the summer he was banking in at $3.50 an hour.
We are a family business.

FOr me a family business is a business where there is love in what people sell, in the customer service. Family business usually care about others.
My favorite idea of a family buisness is just the aspect of pride. If its your family company its so much more than just bringing in money, its more than just a job. Its an idea that a member of your family had and brought to fruition. There is so much more pride and delight in doing something when it is something you created and can continue to pass down through the generations.
(and I LOVE that ornament!)

I used to live in Naperville, so looking at these ornaments brings back so many memories of Chicago!
