This past weekend my sister Kasia did an amazing job acting as the spokesperson for our family owned business. She appeared on ABC Chicago to showcase what we are known for.

"The holidays are all about decorating, and why not pay homage to our Windy City? Polish immigrants Jan and Grazyna do just that at their DOM itp (domitp.com) European housewares shops around town. They celebrate their love for Chicago with keepsakes featuring landmarks such as Millennium Park, Water Tower, Cellular and Wrigley Fields, and the Chicago Municipal Flag. You can find their ornaments at the Christkindlmarket (chirstkindlmarket.com), which opens on November 23 at Daley Plaza."

From abclocal.go.com

I had originally planned on representing our family business but my MIL's health kept me in Cleveland. Luckily my sister who had just stepped off the plane from India-Houston-Mexico-DC-Africa-Chicago took one for the team and appeared on air. You can hardly tell that she traveled around the world the night before. She looked like a natural explaining our family business. Brava, Kasia! The tv segment was very educational and informative, we are very proud of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. My sister captured the spirit of it all in the video below.

Many people aren't aware how much of a family business we are. My younger brother started working at the store when he was my son's age and now he manages the website. My sister designs the Chicago themed ornaments. My mother runs around in her stilettos from one store to the next, every single day of the year making sure everything is stocked. My father has a weekly radio show and deals with the warehouse and logistics of imports from Poland. My son started working at DOMitp for $2.25 an hour. He was up to $3.25 an hour last winter while working at the Christkindlmarket. By the summer he was banking in at $3.50 an hour.

We are a family business.

From our family to yours, win a DOMitp ornament just by telling us what you love most about family businesses, in the comments below. One commenter will win an ornament worth $60.

I love the pride, integrity, and passion family business's bring to their customers everyday.

With family-owned business, it's easy to develop a relationship with the owners and staff, something that doesn't happen with big-box chains. Money spent at local, family-owned businesses stays in the local economy much longer.

I love the customer service you get from a family business. The gap execs aren't running from store to store daily to check inventory... I also love the idea of helping a family that has a name and a face and a grandson pulling in $3.50 hour! Polska-Power!
# Chiloe 2011-11-20 08:49
Your ornaments are simply beautiful !

FOr me a family business is a business where there is love in what people sell, in the customer service. Family business usually care about others.
# Nicole 2011-11-20 08:51
I love the personal attention you receive. You're never just a number when shopping at a small, family-owned business.
# dina kay 2011-11-20 09:25
As part of a family with a nearly 100 year old family business, for me it is the pride. The pride in making it on our own, the pride in your work and the pride in your family when you hear people talk about why they choose to do business there.
# Kelly 2011-11-20 09:47
I just love supporting family owned businesses because they're awesome and are proud of their store and treat customers differently. They make our country better.
# Rachel Tayse 2011-11-20 09:50
I love how family businesses create multi-generational relationships and model these for customers.

Our family business consisted of a Livestock Auction in the middle of Iowa. My Father, the owner, my Mother, the Cashier. My brother Ben, my 2 sisters and I were all at the sale barn every night after school doing whatever needing doing - including cleaning up manure in the cattle barn. It brought us close together and we have memories of 'scooping the poop' as we like to call it!

I forwarded the url for the homepage for your family business to a very good friend of mine who lives in the Cleveland area (North Olmsted). Her husband is Polish and she is Slovak in ethnic background and I know she loves beautiful things -especially those ethnic things from Poland or Slovakia -so I figured she would enjoy looking at the items offered at your family business place. Beautiful items -especially love the dishes and the Christmas ornaments!

I love the relationship and customer service you receive from a family business. The pride everyone takes in their business comes through in every interaction.

Thanks for sharing this video and doing this giveaway! So beautiful! I will definitely look for your family shop at the Market next week! Love family businesses - wish there were more. Love the pride, the togetherness, the traditions, and uniqueness of family businesses. So special that your children are also getting involved!
# Kasia 2011-11-20 19:01
Aww, thanks for the write-up! It truly is a family business.
# Tiffany 2011-11-20 19:20
I think the best thing is the togetherness. Having all that family time together! And your children learn the meaning of family that way. Your family sounds wonderful.
# Karen 2011-11-20 20:55
I love the pride and integrity family owned businesses have it's something the big box stores will never get. I'm hoping to do most of my holiday shopping at local/family owned businesses this year.
# Rhea 2011-11-20 21:09
The shared legacy and the shared pride & hard work. LOVE the ornaments, and your sister did a great job!
# Marta 2011-11-20 21:14
First of all the ornaments are gorgeous. I had no idea that the person was so long and intricate! Your sister did a great job presenting it!

My favorite idea of a family buisness is just the aspect of pride. If its your family company its so much more than just bringing in money, its more than just a job. Its an idea that a member of your family had and brought to fruition. There is so much more pride and delight in doing something when it is something you created and can continue to pass down through the generations.
# kakaty 2011-11-20 21:26
I just love supporting local businesses. Family-owned to me means quality customer care and items that are selected with pride.

(and I LOVE that ornament!)
# Maureen 2011-11-20 22:57
What I love about a family business is the comfort you feel when you enter. You almost feel as though you are part of their family especially when they call you by your first name. Alot of times I envy the closeness that these families seem to have. Plus work is where we spend most of our time so what better way to spend it then with your loved ones.

I love how a business that is family owned and operated treats each customer with respect, values the business they get, and takes pride in the things they are selling/offering.
# sarah 2011-11-21 00:42
I find family run business to be more personable. I love that employees and the family love to talk about what they do and why they do it. They are all about customer service and making your trip to the store enjoyable.
# naomi 2011-11-21 06:31
I'm always amazing by family businesses, but that process of creating those ornaments? REALLY amazing!
# Sarah L. 2011-11-21 11:24
I would have to agree with most of the other people who commented. The personal relationships and attentiveness, as well as pride, make family businesses one of a kind. Great video!

I used to live in Naperville, so looking at these ornaments brings back so many memories of Chicago!
# Heather 2011-11-22 21:10
We're going to Chicago in a few weekends and planning on stopping at Christkindlmarket. My best friend, also from Poland, is coming up with my family! Maybe we'll stop by and pick up some Polish ornaments :)
# Sarah 2011-11-23 16:58
Ours is a family farm, and I love the sense of togetherness a family business brings. It is a beautiful (and yes, sometimes difficult) thing. Happy thanksgiving to your family!
# Denise 2011-11-25 16:02
Being a part of family business for many years I came out of it with integrity. I have carried this wherever I go now.
