Just as important as it is for my husband and I to get away for a date night, to rekindle our relationship; is our family fun night, to rekindle our family dynamic.
We try to make sure that every week includes one family fun night - our jammed packed weekly schedule is truly overwhelming. So on the weekends we dedicate a night just for our family. Sometimes we treat ourselves to a family movie at home (because it's the cheapest option) but since school started we went bowling, had a "family date" in a restaurant, saw a movie in a theatre (holy smokes, expensive for a family of five!), went on a night geocatching trip with flash lights and had board game night twice. Not too shabby for two months of family date nights! We are on a roll!
But, you guys? My girls made me think outside of the box this weekend.
While the boys in our family were watching some family movie that the girls lost interest in (related: SO HARD to find a movie that entertains our family from age 6 to 11), the girls started playing around on imovie. Apparently Lola's fourth-grade class creates imovies for their pen pals in England and she schooled me on a few imovie shortcuts. I one up-ed her and found a perfect app for movie making for the tween crowd.
The best $2.99 app, ever. VideoShop.
Jay was the camera man, the girls hand wrote the screenplay, together they created the movie without Jeff and I saying anything. The parents had no creative say. Actually, we weren't even allowed to watch until the final product was ready for viewing. When we watched the movie together as a family.... it was awesome. Well worth the $2.99! We could not stop laughing.
It was one of the cheapest family fun nights, to date. This is not and ad... just sharing the fun we had as a family.
